Pornind pe urma unui set de piese de șah Staunton, istoria lor ne poartă în perioada interbelică și înainte de aceasta, având ca ghid pe prof. univ. dr. George Dindelegan, care are ca pasiune colecționarea de articole legate de șah.

Dacă setul de piese de șah Staunton este elementul de start pentru această privire în istoria șahului, cele ce leagă mai puternic de viața șahistă din România, de începuturile Federației Române de Șah (s-a înființat în 1925, la un an după Federația Internațională de Șah), sunt documentele unui mare pasionat de șah – farmacistul Virgil Șotropa.
Membru al unei familii de intelectuali, cu vărful academicianul Virgil Șotropa, farmacistul clujean Virgil Șotropa s-a implicat profund în șahul românesc încercând, printre altele, în repetate rânduri să aducă în România pe marii campioni mondiali ai vremii, Jose Raul Capablanca și Alexandr Alehin.

Starting from a set of Staunton chess pieces, their history takes us to the interwar period and before, with prof. univ. dr. George Dindelegan as a guide, who has a passion for collecting chess-related items.

If the Staunton chess set is the starting point for this look into the history of chess, those that are more strongly linked to chess life in Romania, to the beginnings of the Romanian Chess Federation (founded in 1925, one year after the International Chess Federation), are the documents of a great chess enthusiast – pharmacist Virgil Șotropa.
A member of a family of intellectuals, led by academician Virgil Șotropa, the Cluj pharmacist Virgil Șotropa was deeply involved in Romanian chess, trying, among other things, repeatedly to bring to Romania the great world champions of the time, Jose Raul Capablanca and Alexander Alekhine.
